The STORY of SELD – pull up a chair…

The seld has always evoked strong childhood memories for me growing up on the family farm – a little like the reassuring clunk of the Aga door closing. Firstly, I should explain to all non West Walians what a seld is. Seld is the colloquial term for a wooden dresser – the central hub or ‘mothership’ (call it what you will) of a kitchen on a Welsh farm. Many people would polish their seld fastidiously and would use it to show off their best china, but ours was all about practicality and daily use. Ours felt like part of the family, in as much as a slab of wood can. As soon as I’d left the farm and got married there was only one thing on my mind, no – not the husband, but getting my hands on my own seld. We couldnít afford a new or a nice antique one so I rummaged through ‘The Exchange and Mart’ and found one advertised somewhere near Mountain Ash in the Welsh Valleys.

I dragged Gareth (the husband) over there without much thought of transport and decided after little deliberation that the aforementioned seld would be our first piece of family furniture. Gareth, being the practical one, uttered the words “There’s no way that’s going to fit in the car”, (a phrase which has since become as much a part of the family as the seld itself…). It turned out that he had a fair point, but who ever said that it had to fit IN the car?! We proceeded to strap both parts of the dresser to the roof of our Volkswagen Beetle and cheerily headed back down the A470 to our little terrace house in Cardiff. All was well until we lurched to a sudden stop at some traffic lights… and the dresser didn’t. Sometime later we arrived back in Cardiff –no reported casualties or deaths and the dresser was still in only 2 pieces. Since then, the seld has adapted well over the years to our evolving family life –from storing the children’s toys to now holding family heirlooms, memorabilia and a load of CDs. It’s had numerous coats of paint over the years, and by now I expect that the paint is the only thing holding it together… Any mention of getting rid of our trusted friend is greeted with shrieks of horror from the kids. When we had to choose a name for our company we thought that seld was a great play on words – being Welsh, and seeing as I ‘dressed people’s houses – a Welsh Dresser aka SELD was the only choice!

Definitely one of the strongest colours for the season. With a neutral yet warm feel, a nod to vintage and perfect as a highlight or accompaniment to many other colours, mustard is a great tone to introduce to an interior.

Mustard works well with olive, teak or walnut wood tones. It is a stand out tone to use in a mostly neutral and white interiors. We love it with other colours of the season – rust orange and olive green.

We picked this up-cycling of a small vintage unit as one of our favourite projects, which she did to show the versatility of working with second hand furniture (this piece sourced from a charity she was working with to promote buying second hand!) Just one of the many exciting projects that fill her cool home; inspiring people to make more of the homes even if they are renting but still want to make design statements within their four walls – inspirational, budget friendly ideas.

Learn to love the medium of collage and embrace your inner Matisse during this collage workshop.

What you will do
You will work alongside print designer Katy Welsh (@katydwelsh) to explore composition and the art of colour play, creating our own abstract compositions and translating these into collage using hand cut shapes. 

The Materials
We will be working with brightly coloured sticky back vinyl, usually used for sign making and shop windows, Katy has discovered it is a great material for collage too.

The Outcome
During the workshop, you will create a series of A3 collaged artworks that you can take away with you, and an appreciation for playing with shapes!

About Katy
Katy designs patterns for companies across the world, her work has been applied to products from gift wrap, mugs and cards to cushions and clothing.

She embraces anything handmade and collage has been a big part of her process from the beginning.

Some of her biggest inspirations include Matisse, Picasso and the Bloomsbury group; she likes to have fun with design and is excited to share her knowledge with you!

The new ‘maritime’ trend has a far softer and subtle feel than nautical trends of the past.

Still with a feel of being in and around the sea coast but through textures, colours, patterns and imprints as opposed to more obvious use of rope, anchors and red, blue and white.

The colours are washed out blues, sandy beiges, dirty whites and with metallic hints to give an edge of boat engines, rusty hand rails and anchor chains and using natural weave in rugs, runners and chair seats; as a nod to sailors rope.

There’s much layering in textures and fabrics, with patterns of stripe, weave and linear illustration alike to shell patterns.

Add in collected nicknacks from travels, clusters of vases and stick to natural fabrics and surfaces – wood, wicker, bamboo, cotton, wool and silk.
