This season shiney finishes and silk paint is out, and in comes matte walls and painted furniture.

Whether it’s light fittings, accessories, unit doors or table tops the look combines oxidized metals, matte glazes and chalk paint finishes. Black and grey look great in matte, but to bring lighter shades into a room consider creams, aqua greens [ in lighter shades ] and other pastel tones.

This trend works well in minimalist interiors and can be mixed with elements of Industrial, Rustic and Scandinavian. And note not everything has to be matte, mix with textured and reflective items such at leather, glass and metal to bring a well collated, thought through interior. Be selective in your choices and bring in colour where possible.

With regards to walls you can use wallpaper with minimal pattern or our preferred option is to paint. Consider clay and earthy colours [ in matte ] or try two colours [ pastels ] and divide a wall in half or an interesting pattern. Check out bestlivingroomdesigns.com for ideas.

The vamping a bedroom with new furniture can be costly so a good alternative is to make a bed look like new with a new DIY headboard. Or by a cheap basic base and make it look better with your own designed head board.

We found some great projects that use anything from reclaimed wood to old doors as a base for your project. Think outside the box – you could try an area of tiling, patterned or plain, to create a modern look or work on creating a giant weaving that could hang at the top of the bed. You could even suspend a rug in the place of the board to create a textured bohemian feel. Search online now for sale rugs from West Elm or Urban Outfitters that would look great.

Head to CuteDIYProjects or DIYnCrafts for a big selection of tutorials for head boards – a great selection of projects for many skill levels.

For two days a year in September, London opens up some of it’s best architectural secrets in the annual Open House London. For over 25 years we have had the privilege and excitement to be able to look inside, learn and appreciate the inner workings and designs of many of London’s greatest buildings that for the rest of the time remain a secret and closed to the public. It’s a pleasure and an eye opener to see inside, be educated and get a look behind closed doors of anything from disused theatres to historic homes to business hubs.

They say;

Open House was started in 1992 as a small, not-for-profit organisation to promote public awareness and appreciation of the capital’s building design and architecture. The intention was to open up London’s splendid buildings to the general public who don’t otherwise have access. We saw this as a way of helping the wider community to become more knowledgeable, engage in dialogue and make informed judgements on architecture.

Get a chance to see for yourself on September 17th & 18th 2016

From mid August the schedule will be available to view online of all open houses. A few locations are ballot ticketed and have  already been allocated but the majority are open – no tickets required!

Previous year’s experiences include The Royal College of Physicians, Subterranean Light, the Fitzrovia Chapel and the Alexandra Palace abandoned theatre (now being brought back to life through grants)

This successful event has now spread to over 30 cities across the world offering the same unique experiences with their great architecture and hidden buildings.
