home: made [ picture ledge ]

A really simple way to show off pictures and photos is by using a ledge. Rather than hanging frames straight to the wall using a picture ledge gives you flexibility to group different pictures as well as swapping them around if needed.

Picture ledges are popular in stores and can be easily found with prices starting from under £10, but sometimes the length and depth isn’t to your suiting. So why not try making your own.

By using just three lengths of wood [ depth and length your choice ], some wood glue, clamps, paint and screws you can create the perfect picture ledge for your home. If you are looking to keep costs as low as possible use MDF, alternatively use plywood. These you can easily get hold of at B&Q or Homebase [ you will be able to get them cut for you as well ].

home: trend [ matte finish ]

This season shiney finishes and silk paint is out, and in comes matte walls and painted furniture.

Whether it’s light fittings, accessories, unit doors or table tops the look combines oxidized metals, matte glazes and chalk paint finishes. Black and grey look great in matte, but to bring lighter shades into a room consider creams, aqua greens [ in lighter shades ] and other pastel tones.

This trend works well in minimalist interiors and can be mixed with elements of Industrial, Rustic and Scandinavian. And note not everything has to be matte, mix with textured and reflective items such at leather, glass and metal to bring a well collated, thought through interior. Be selective in your choices and bring in colour where possible.

With regards to walls you can use wallpaper with minimal pattern or our preferred option is to paint. Consider clay and earthy colours [ in matte ] or try two colours [ pastels ] and divide a wall in half or an interesting pattern. Check out bestlivingroomdesigns.com for ideas.

home: trend [ mirrors ]

Gone are the days when you simply put a mirror up in your bathroom, bedroom or hallway just for it’s practical purpose. Mirrors in the home now are seen as design statements and decorative objects.
The variety of designs available in stores and online offer you a great selection to choose from.
We’ve picked some of the popular on trend styles and our favourites.
One of the biggest trends this year is bringing mixed metal finishes on mirror frames – copper, brass and gold – often with a strong industrial feel. Rounded edge square and rectangular mirrors work great in achieving this look.
Another popular choice is the round hanging mirror. Get the simple scandinavian feel with the mix of wood and leather.

Bring colour and texture into your room with a bright frame or subtle blocks of metallic and pastels. The popular geometric trend continues to grow and works really well in mirrors – we love the ferm living wonder mirror, combining a hexagonal design with different woods, doubling up as a shelf for displaying objects.
Mirrors don’t always need to be flat either. Go bold with a 3D inspired design, bringing a strong focal point to a living room or bedroom.

Get a vintage look with a hanging art deco inspired mirror. Rather than going for a modern feel with leather or rope hanging element, pick a thin delicate chain. This combined with a more ornate shape will give a strong decorative statement.
For a bigger statement go for a retro sunburst mirror. This popular mid century design is having a resurgence in homes and works really well in a modern inspired room. The gold or brass finish sits really well with dark walls of grey or navy.
With wooden framed mirrors avoid light colours and opt for dark wood veneers like walnut or mango.

home: favourite thing [ concrete jar ]

We are partial to a concrete accessory or two around the home, so this storage jar from Rose & Grey is a winner in our eyes.
The simple design is contemporary as well as practical and would sit perfectly in a kitchen for storing foods such as coffee or pasta, alternatively it will look great as a decorative object on a shelf or unit, sat with other pots or vases.

Available in grey or white [ £10.50 ]

It is already well established in it’s home country of Australia, but now Typo [ part of cotton:on group ] is dipping it’s toes in the UK.

The online shop [ launched this month ] is full of quirky trend led gifts including letter light boxes, an array of pen / plant pots, some great storage and really cool stationary.
Typo is very well priced with a huge selection of products. With bricks and mortar stores planned in the UK it looks like it could be the next big thing – watch out tigerstores.co.uk.

home: trend [ exotic ]

home: trend [ exotic ]

Another great trend for spring/summer is Exotic. A bright and vibrant trend full of print and texture. The main elements will come from the soft furnishings – floral and heavily patterned cushions, throws and rugs. Pile up cushions for depth on sofas and beds, with a statement rug as a focus in the middle of the room.
Accessories like bowls, vases and statement lighting help pull this look together. [ Check out West Elm ]
Wooden furniture, especially bamboo sit in this eastern influenced trend. Low units and tables work best in medium and dark woods.
Colours to consider are green, orange and purple with accents of gold and bronze, with texture coming from woven baskets and ceramics.
