It’s almost just a month away and if you’re busy planning gifts and festive nights out, don’t forgot about the decorating and it can be simple and low cost to create effect displays, decorations and centre pieces with items sourced from around the home, foraged from your local park or handy bits picked up from a local craft store.

From around the home find old jam jars, cardboard, string, old baubles, even an old dried up sponge can be useful.

Foraging free bits from out and about is also great – local woodlands having an abundance of conifers, holly, pine cones, twigs, branches and more.

Then from local craft stores (or online) choose items including metallic spray, glitter, pva glue and soft wire.

With these items you can create unique decorations using imagery from Pinterest for inspiration.

Use PVA and glitter to create a Christmas feel to branches of conifer tree, by pasting on the glue and sprinkling over the glitter; and create a long garland for the mantle piece by tying the branches together with wire.

Spray jars with metallic spray and tie gold or silver round to make festive little vases for winter flora and twigs. Cluster various sizes together to make a centre piece for the table.

Cut and stick cardboard into cone shapes, coat in PVA glue and wind sparkly twine or string round, ensuring not to leave any gaps to produce modern, simple statement Christmas trees. Again these would look great in varied sizes and clustered together.

Using old baubles in shades of the same colour and modelling wire with an old sponge as an oasis, poke in each bauble on a wire stick to make a gorgeous dome of baubles – another great centre piece. Or go extravagant (slightly more complex) and create an entire sphere which could be hung from the ceiling!

With all the options of lighting available sometimes it’s nice to find a traditional lamp shade, an easy way to update an old base. We have spotted this lovely example from ikea.com.

The cut out detail on the shade casts a pattern of light when on and when off it’s an attractive addition to any room.

As we may have mentioned before we love concrete, its finish, its colour and there are so many creative ways to use it in the home. One fun idea we found is to use it to make 3D letters using a mould. Make words or use ititials to personalise a shelf in the home.

You can get hold of a cement mix easy enough from a DIY store and an alpahbet mould, we spotted some on amazon.co.uk.

Follow this tutorial from burkatron.com for how to do it.
