home: trend [ convex mirrors ]

There has been a gradual increase in popularity for convex mirrors. Most take on the form of traditional ships mirrors with thick wooden frames.

With variations available everywhere and in different sizes, now is the time to explore the appeal of a convex mirror.

Some think that a mirror should be practical and in many ways we agree, but with the shape of a convex the clear view is distorted with a fish eye effect, and we love it.

This shape creates a wider view of the room and helps reflect light from windows more than a flat mirror. You can still see a clear reflection straight on, but from different angles you gain so much more.

We should all give a convex mirror a home.

home: trend [ midcentury monochrome ]

The angles, the curves, the familiar silhouette of midcentury design sits so well with a monochrome interior. A little hint of walnut tones is all you need to soften the monochrome look.

Across the high street there are so many homewares and furniture embracing the style and designs from the midcentury era.

It’s easy to create this trend from modern stores but also it’s a great excuse to explore vintage markets, auctions and antiques fairs. Look for designs from brands including Ercol (furniture), Midwinter and Meakin that have some beautiful design and great monochrome pieces (ceramics).

Use vintage vases, lamps and plates for decorative display to compliment the look.

Its time to embrace embellishments with this gorgeous 2018 trend; and shop for anything with tassels, tufting, fringes and feathers.

The bohemian influences are strong for this look, layering, natural colours, textures upon textures, but it can also work with a clean, minimal look – using white homewares but with embellishments for texture, ensuring everything is in natural creams and whites.

Shops across the high street have a big range to create this look. It’s also worth having a search around vintage markets, eBay and searching for international sellers.

home: trend [ geometrics ]

We have seen this trend before and geometric patterns are always going to appeal, but this time the focus turns away from soft furnishings like cushions and rugs and more about wallpapers, tiles and art.

We are spoilt for choice when it comes to tiles and whether it’s for the bathroom, kitchen or floor we can create bold patterns and experiment with colour. Create a focal point with a vinyl floor in a kitchen, leaving the walls a plain colour or maybe it’s a patterned wallpaper that takes your fancy, to act as a statement backdrop to the rest of the room.

A great way to introduce pattern into a room is with art. Choose a select few pieces to bring interest to a wall. Whatever you do be brave and embrace geometrics.

home: trend [ marble coffee tables ]

Marble is strong trend for so many homewares and furniture, it’s been high on the radar for a while and is set to stay there this year. It’s such a great material, it’s practically become a new neutral. It can sit amongst many strong interior trends and work with many home styles. It goes perfectly with a minimalistic white interior but is equally a great way to break up and brighten an interior using strong jewel tones – layered and dark. Marble can come in black, white or sandy tone and this lends itself to an easy add in to designing a room.

A nice easy way to introduce or use marble when styling a room is with a coffee table. And there is an absolute abundance of high street, designer and online stores offering a huge variety of styles, silhouettes, sizes and prices.

Designs often mix marble tops with metal framework base either quite minimal or with a geometric influence or wooden legs, wooden frames and even matching it with another material like wood or plastic and segmenting the top surface.

home: trend [ tropical botanicals ]

We have seen a lot of tropical prints over the last year, so this won’t be new to most. But with fresh takes on pattern with a focus on the botanicals and feel good colours, it’s hanging around for a while longer, and a winner in many peoples eyes.

For an instant jungle vibe wallpaper is the place to start, choosing a basic palm leaf pattern or go all out with one with animals as well.

Cushions are also a great way to introduce this trend bringing print and pattern to a plain sofa or chair. Bring some fun to a dining table with palm inspired tablecloth or table runner.

home: trend [ ombre ]

home: trend [ ombre ]

There’s a gorgeous colour effect to bring into your home – ombre.

This beautiful colour haze can be introduced to a current colour scheme if you match the colour.

To create the ombre look pick one or two pieces eg. Cushions and curtains, in an ombre pattern fabric and then colour the rest of the interior in block colours of shades of the ombre tone.

If you’re feeling bold use ombre for a wall paper – a strong look – then collate other homewares in the same colour – this rich look would look great if using one of the popular jewel tones; currently an on trend colour palette that’s across homeware stores on the high street and online.
