home: trend [ 70s ]

There was some incredible design and style to come out of the seventies – it wasn’t all bad bell bottoms and glitter, but the design mentality of the midcentury continued, evolved and produced slick but funky interior design, luxury and a lot about comfort and relaxing – think low level seating, sumptuous throws, endless cushions, fabric on walls, even padded walls… dinner partying in the home and cocktail evenings or ‘soirées’ were becoming all the rage so creating the right home environment was key.

Fast forward to present day and a lot across the current high street has taken inspiration from the styles, patterns, furniture silhouettes and luxurious feel.

The colour palette to stick to should include neutral creams and beiges with rust, red, mustard and green tones. For a modern approach keep things quite minimal with not overlaying too many strong patterns as they would have done in the 70s.

Hunt on eBay, in markets and at car boots for pottery, ceramics and homewares of the era to bring in the right details but also high street favourites Habitat and Dunelm have some great modern equivalents.

January is always the time of the year when everybody starts talking about DIY, cleansing the home, revamping rooms and this is great. But if you are struggling for ideas and need some guidance then there are loads of fab books available to do just that.

home: trend [ rust ]

The rust tone is warm and it’s best layered with lots shades of this one colour – plus splashes of rose as a lightener. This creates a lovely building of the colour with no striking other colours to distract from the colour. It’s not overwhelming at all. It’s also a colour that works with trends including Traveller, Moroccan and Woodland.

If you just want a little rust, use in a clean white or soft grey interior with lots of wood tones and keep minimal so the rust stands out.

For walls we’ve found Red Earth (Farrow + Ball) and Heat (Little Green Paint Co). Create the full impact by also painting skirtings, doors, frames as well as walls in a rust tone.

Start the New Year with your creative juices flowing by making some art for you home. We found this fun Risograph Image Making Workshop at Hato Press in London. Learn the techniques of riso-printing and collage in a 2.5 hr session.

‘We’ll take you behind the scenes at our printing studio, packed with different paper stock, riso drums and colourful ink tubes. As a group we will perform a test exercise on riso-printing and work through a few art production techniques. Then it’s time to experiment with your individual artwork using a range of materials, including our pre-made templates, inks, stamps, clippings, charcoal and many more. We will be on hand to give you advice and tips on your artwork, and then we’re off to the live printing action of your master creation!‘

Deeper colour palette, rich tones and the flora abundant in winter, brings all the warmth to an interior for winter.

home: trend [ 2019 paint colours ]

Every year we see different trending colours and popular shades in magazines and online. This last year has seen pink take over our lives, the introduction of the Millennial Pink has made way for a lot more softer shades, earthy tones and neutrals.

Of course vibrant red, teal and yellow has all made an appearance this last year inspiring those who want to be more adventureous.

Looking ahead to 2019 we have picked out four colours from four top paint brands, with what they believe will be colours of next year.

Dulux – Spiced honey [ top right ]

This shade is full of warmth and calmness, perfect for a living room or bedroom. The warm amber tone can be worked with other shades including plums, greys, and greens to create an appealing colour pallete.

Farrow & Ball – Sulking room pink [ bottom left ]

Pink shades are hanging around and we love them. With colour inspiration coming from raw plaster, putty, and stone this pink tone is a great addition to these popular colours. This versatile shade will work in any room and create a tranquil space.

Graham & Brown – Tori [ top left ]

Moving away from the pack, G&B have gone down a more intense and rich direction with this gorgeous teal shade. Very regal and and with a luxurious quality Tori would create a striking backdrop to any room. It will also compliment the must have earthy and nuetral shades that we have previously mentioned.

Crown – Redefined [ bottom right ]

Crown have created pallets to inspire us and Redefined is the one we have chosen. Taking inspiration from terrazzo – the multi coloured marble chips – form the shades. We see whites, clay, pale grey and pinks all working together. Use these colours in blocks for impact.
