One of the most popular accessories for the home over the last six months has to be the terrarium. Bringing some plantlife in to the home in the form of a mini greenhouse. Terrariums come in all shapes and sizes with the basic idea that the plants / cacti sit in a glass bowl or vessel, with the most popular recently being geometric shaped [ look at Oliver Bonas ].

Instead of buying one already done, why not give it a go yourself and plant up your very handmade terrarium. Simply get hold of the glass vessel, this can be anything from a small round bowl to a larger hanging version, a selection of plants, stones, and soil. You can buy kits that give you everything you need if you want to make things easier [ Geo-Fleur have a great starter kit ].

Have fun when creating your terranium, use coloured stones or sand or perhaps add in some fun animal ornaments.

We love a fun DIY project with great results. Produce and making your own homeware is satisfying, rewarding, often cheaper than buying the item and also a good way to update something old or plain.

We found some great tutorials at DIY Network for making and designing rugs for your home. There’s a great selection of different projects to achieve varying looks depending on your style or needs.

Many of the projects use old T-shirts, scraps of wool or fabric, or plain rugs which can be picked up cheaply and many highstreet homeware stores.

In recent weeks we have noticed the popular trend of indoor ladders used as decorative and practical objects in the home. Ideal for hanging plant pots and tea towels in a kitchen, hooks and accesories in a hallway or maybe just somewhere to hang clothing in a bedroom.

To get the look why not try making one yourself. A wood finish is great as you can look at different thicknesses to suit or use dowling rods [ plus you can paint it any colour you like ]. Alternatively opt for copper, a popular choice still. Using piping and attachments it couldn’t be easier.

A material that has mixed views within the home is concrete. Some see it as ugly and lifeless, others see it as an interesting, even beautiful material with many uses.
We are much more the later so today we look at gorgeous accesories you can create in the home using concrete. There are loads of great tutorials and guides online showing how easy it is to make a concrete moulds for all types of projects.
A simple place to start is making tealight votives or a hanging plant stand. You pick the size and shape using plastic pots or old bottles and with a bag of cement mix away you go.

If you’re feeling a little more adventurous try creating a concrete pendant lamp. Again using the same process with bottles, this time you will need the cable and light bulb attachments, and a little more patience, but you will have a stunning contemporary light after. Further to our highlight of enjoying outdoor living now that summer is here we look at a simple idea to enhance an outdoor space.

If your fences are looking a little dated and worn but it’s either impossible or too much money to replace them all, using cheap battening can give a great modern clean look to old panels.

Using the existing fence posts as your base of support, you can evenly mount new batons horizontally with spacing, to create a new design and look.

Batons or narrow wood (approx 2”x 1”) can be purchased from your local wood merchant or building suppliers. Most will offer a cutting service for a small cost if you don’t wish to cut all the lengths yourself. Then for the easiest fixing use long outdoor weather resistant screws and a drill.

This simple battening idea can also then create a great system for hanging pots, planting, lighting and other paraphenalia from. It can be handy for small spaces to allow the use of the walls for growing fruit, veg and flowers if there isn’t much floor space. It also keeps things out the way from pets, foxes and little fingers!

A popular trend for the home at the moment is leather strap shelving. We all have ornaments, pictures and vases that we like to display, so why not make your shelf as eye catching as what’s on them.
This very simple idea is basically made up of three elements – a wooden board, leather straps and metal tacks. Use a board from an old shelf or maybe you have an off cut from some old diy project. The leather straps you can get hold of from eBay or just use a couple of belts.

Simple creative projects are great to make personal gifts, are fun with the kids and result in unique items for the home.

Items dipped in paint are hugely on trend right now with stores offering a variety of furniture and accessories with the ‘dipped in paint’ look. Anything from stools and coffee tables to vases and glasses can look great with splashes of colour. It’s an easy way to get highlights of present colour trends into an interior – currently popular is copper, neons and simple monochrome – either black or white.

Start small with an easy project of dipped wooden spoons. All you need is spray or paint, masking tape, a brush and to strengthen to allow washing use a sealing agent like acrylic sealer, shellac or paint in enamel paint instead.

Head to high street kitchen stores, IKEA, or supermarkets for cheap basic wooden spoons.

The use of tiles are storming interior design this year. It’s about thinking outside the box with both designs, patterns but also where to use tiles.

Not just for the bathroom walls or a hallway floor, but bring a cool design feature to a bedroom with a tiled back drop to a bed, to a lounge with a feature wall or even for function use on hallway walls to help with the marks and wear from heavy traffic through this busy room.

Explore high street stores like Topstiles, Habitat, Homebase and B&Q ; and online retailers including Zazous and The London Tile Co for affordable tiles. Mix patterned tiles with plain, square with oblong and play with size and shape with hexagon shaped tiles, large scale tiles and mosaics.

You can also explore the vinyl tile market with modern brands including Zazous and Amtico producing up to date designs in vinyl that is hard wearing, easy to lay and with very competitive pricing compared to porcelain or ceramic tiles.

Be bold with pattern or play safe with neutral tones and then over lay with rugs to bring pattern and interest to an interior.

Tiles are hard wearing and functional. Use instead of carpet or wall paper as a great alternative.

The monochrome trend is still going strong. A great idea this season is to start bringing in small injections of colour through accessories.
This subtle but effective idea of adding paint to a vase looks contemporary and is really easy to do.
You will need to find a plain vase, either white or a glass one you can spray white [ Hm.com & Ikea.com have a good choice starting from £1 ].
Choose some acrylic paint, neon tones are perfect for this season.
There are a couple of ways to create the effects, either dipping the vase and letting the paint run down, or splattering the paint and building it up.
