Looking to great a new look for the garden or update a patio? Pushing the trend for outdoor rugs further we love the idea of stencilling patterns or designs directly onto a patio or decking.

By using stencils (or freehand if very creative) you can produce a unique, look for an outdoor area – choosing from styles including geometric, Moroccan, ethnic, bohemian or midcentury.

Floral prints are always a popular choice, especially around this time of year. Spring brings flowers and colour which in turn brings joy and positivity into our lives. This is then replicated in the home with our interior choices. This year its the same, although now the prints are bolder, bigger and more colourful.

Florals have often felt quite old fashioned and it can be difficult to know how to use them in the home. A great place to start is with soft furnishings; cushions and rugs in a distictive pattern mixed with more plain colours help bring this trend in a subtle way. Mix different floral prints together for a bolder look or with other patterns like stripes and geometric [ see previous trend post floral x geo ].

Large floral images look great framed as pieces of art, and just having a few of these around the home or placed together on a wall can create a subtle nod or full on statement to this trend. Go even more bold with a mural wallpaper or an allover patterned sofa. The wall becomes a piece of art on a larger scale and can bing drama to a room and a floral sofa is fun and quirky, making all your guests smile when they enter the room. Go one step further and match your sofa with the wallpaper, for a full on statement.

This trend might not be for everyone but this season’s animal of choice is the Butterfly. Ever popular for its variations and colour the Butterfly is a happy motif that isn’t just for kids.

Whether on wallpaper, soft furnishings or printed on decorative objects the Butterfly print needs to be bold and full of colour. Don’t shy away from making a statement, cover a whole wall with a design. The Christian Laquoix wallpaper is a great example of this.

Such a find when wandering through the Design Junction show room – Charlene Mullen is a print, ceramic and embroidered homeware designer, whose unique designs are stand out and incredible quality.

In the lovely old-meets-new development at Kings Cross (London), Granary Square was host to this year’s Design Junction. A huge spread of exhibitors showing new season products and interior trends as well as super brands popping up shop selling current products, home accessories, accessories and furniture.

Here we got to meet the lovely Jo Angell and see her brand (of the same name) selling her gorgeous pattern and architectural lead designs in print, on homewares and stationery. Angell, based in North London, from her extensive and successful graphic design background now produces her designs on fabric, art prints and wall paper, as well as translating these designs to tea towels, ceramic mugs and greetings cards.

Her patterns are crisp and fun using great colours, and all pieces would be fantastic in a modern home. Her prints would stand out alone on a wall but work excellently in a gallery cluster and her kitchenwares would brighten up any crisp white kitchen. We love her bold designs taken from images of an favourite London architectural site – the old, no longer used, gas holders, which turn these metalwork giants into a great colourful abstract prints on paper and fabric.

A very simple way to freshen up a room and bring a new feel to a space is by using soft furnishings, especially cushions. This can also be an inexpensive way of updating a sofa or chair by changing existing covers. This Summer the big trend is graphic print, and statement imagery. With a little reinterpretation of the strength of wildness of the 1970s this trend is a contemporary take on the clashing patterns, natural textiles, pattern mixing of the original look.

Bring together the organic feel of natural homewares including wicker, macrame, wood, jute and brick with the richness of burnt oranges, purples and brown. Use fabrics like velvets in sofas, weaves for walk hangings, hides and fluffy afghans in rugs and cushions and mix with earthy tones and metallics in the lighting, ceramics and sculptures.

It’s with the wall and floor covering that this trend really gains strength. Introduce wood panelling effect walls, real exposed stone walls, textured giant wall hangings of rich colour themes and the key to this trend – lots of indoor planting. Use great house plants with super architectural leaves and layer up with small hanging plants in plant hangers and also wooden and woven planters.
