home: trend [ desert ]

We are needing a retreat, a place of calm and perhaps an interior that makes us think of warmer climates, holidays and miles of endless sands.

The desert trend back for 2017, with the surge in popularity of succulents and cacti still growing (happy plants we generally succeed in not killing!) is a strong easy look to pull together in a home. High street (and designer) stores have plenty of natural homewares, products that look as if they’ve been gathered from travels and craft inspired goods.

Use bright light interiors and bring in leathers, weaves, wood and tapestry. Search vintage fairs for large patterned rugs or head to highstreet stores including Urban Outfitters, La Redoute and House Doctor for new versions. The current Summer sales are perfect to pick up large items that work with this trend – suede sofas and leather armchairs and with the good weather explore markets and carboots, and thrift unusual items, pottery and trinkets to build the look.

Stick to neutral colours, dark and light but throw in a little colour in an odd chair or patterned cushion. Essentially use indoor planting for fresh green tones that will set off well against the tans, beiges, whites, creams and other neutral tones – with highlights of gold and bronze.

Get creative and work on your own DIY projects for accessories – macrame pot holders, woven hangings for the wall and block print canvases leaning casually against the side.

This summer sees a trend that embraces the natural Earth, sustainability and grounding ourselves with the planet we walk on.

Bringing together a natural inspired set of colour palettes;

‘This colour scheme draws from a palette taken from natural rocks, deserts, earth and trees featuring pale rose, peach, cinnamon, tan, ochre, burnt orange, burgundy and terracotta.’
LondonEssentials.com

It creates a warm interior and encourages a slower pace. The tones compliment each other and work along side each other alike to the natural world.

Using tones of each shade, build up this look through soft furnishings, furniture and all the way to wall finishes. Embrace textured coloured wall papers, feature walls in painted choices and subtle texture and pattern in throws and cushions including the use of silks, linens, weaves and matt finishes in ceramics and furniture.

home: trend [ dark kitchens ]

In between the love for white minimal and Scandinavian pops of colour, the strong trend for dark tones within the kitchen is a beautiful stylish style direction to head in.

Choosing between dark cabinets, counters, wall tiling, floor covering or all of the above creates a deep rich interior – a modern look for a home.

Ikea // dark kitchen cabinet doors

Bringing together a lot of dark tones (greys and blacks) is a bold move but it pays off. Although high lighting with colour or white is also a great look. Intersperse dark cabinets with white tiling or use a paler paint or  flooring to soften the darkness.

For accessories, using other on-trend colours of the moment including metallics, blushes and pastels or light greys will really add to the look.

Across the high street big brands and smaller independent brands, seek out well chosen kitchenalia, ceramics, equipment and utensils to compliment the look.

home: trend [ drinks trolleys ]

The trend for using drinks trolleys in the home is growing with high street and designer stores alike continuing to stock great styles. The drinks trolley is a versatile, practical, movable piece of furniture that, with all the current styles available (modern, retro, antique, industrial, minimal) there’s one to suit every home and they’re aren’t just for drinks and glasses .

This handy piece of furniture is great for a multitude of uses – kitchenalia, toiletries, make up, books, as a side table, office and work goods, even shoes.

With prices up from around £50 there’s something for every budget plus hunting eBay, vintage markets or furniture charity stores can often come up trumps with some amazing prices especially when they are a little worn round the edges and need a little sanding, painting or cleaning – it’s a great upcycling project which benefits you to allow you to colour or style the piece to suit your home.

Vinyl flooring is a winner on so many levels; easy to lay, affordable, durable, waterproof and now recently comes in so many incredible patterns, finishes and styles.

We love this gorgeous pink tone terrazzo look vinyl from Atrafloor.com at just £59 per sqm to create a luxe, in trend, stylish look for any room.

home: trend [ greys ]

home: trend [ greys ]

Continuing to be a strong trend for 2017, grey is a familiar safe option for interiors that is flexible and adaptable to your taste and style. It’s a modern neutral colour and especially when the lighter tones are used, it’s easy to compliment and create a homely interior. Although, those braver can make incredible design statements using the darker, richer tones and layering up shades of grey can be very effective.

Visit Pinterest, and great sites like ApartmentTherapy.com for inspirational guides.

Importantly your shades have to sit next to each other. With greys coming in warm, cool and varying Pantones, it’s worth having material swatches or paint samples when choosing pieces for a room.

A good base is to start with a wall colour and the main piece of furniture – like the sofa.

We love the (pictured above) Made.com Scott sofa (£999) matched with Farrow + Ball Railings almost pitch black grey. To this you can build on with soft furnishings, maybe using highlights of a blush pink or copper. For a clean, less bold approach use lots of white with grey to lighten and soften the look.

Recent trends have seen flooring as an area of the home people are investing in more and more; looking for creative, original solutions for a statement look that is both current but adaptable to sit with various styles of interior designs as we change walls, textiles and furniture more often.

From dark woods to grey natural tones, to flexible resistant cork and wow-factor pattern ceramic tiles, across designer and high street brands there’s a lot to choose from.

Focus is on hard wearing and durable finishes and an advantage is to have something that is partially replaceable if damaged – like a tile or plank to easily swap. Having spare of your chosen flooring is a must for just such reason – so having a little left over is not a bad thing.

We love the recent designs of incorporating the look of texture and fabric within the finish of a tile – linens and silks working well.

For child friendly and uber hardwearing yet still modern and on trend, we think cork and chipboard are great options especially if you’re on a budget. Both materials are easy to get hold of and simple to get a sample to lay a little just to get an idea of the look.

If you love the look of vintage or traditional patterned, tiles but the prices can be rather high it’s great to look into vinyl tile versions that look both incredible and very durable, plus underfoot feels warmer and safer. Zazous, Tiles Direct and Leader Floors have great options. Vinyl is also as the cheaper version easy and less costly to change in the future when tastes change.

Modern vinyl has opened up the flooring market, with more and more finishes and patterns previously available only in other materials, now being replicated in vinyl – same look but cheaper. DIY favourite Homebase has a super new range of slate, porcelain and terrazzo look vinyl tiles that have a rich, textured finish but with the benefits of vinyl in warmth, durability and price.

Hunt out bargains, read reviews and order lots of samples of buying off the internet to ensure you are aware of finish, quality and thickness.
