If you are looking for some fun accessories for the home, and something with a bit of history then you should take a look at these wooden dolls from Vitra. we love the vibrant colours and charm of these dolls, originally used as toys, now hugely popular as ornaments for collectors.

‘Together with his friends Charles and Ray Eames & George Nelson, Alexander Girard was one of the leading figures of postwar American design. A key source of inspiration for his wife-ranging oeuvre, which primarily focused on textile design, was.his passion for the folk art of South America, Asia and Eastern Europe.

The Decorative wooden dolls, design  and made by Girard in 1953 for his own home in Santa Fe, were likewise inspired by his extensive personal collection of folk art.

Based on the originals found in the Girard Estate by the Vitra Design Museum, the whimsical assortment of doils, both joyful and grim, is now available as a charming enhancement to any interior’

home: trend [ reflective ]

This trend is all about metalic finishes and reflective surfaces. Create a space where light and colour bounces around the room through key pieces of furniture and accessories.

Look at coloured glass, mirror and high gloss marble finishes on table tops and shelving alongside warm metals like brass and gold. An obvious start to get this look is with a large mirror, and there are some great designs available in stores mixing different shapes and finishes so no need to be traditional.

Black and green marble give a subtle reflective surface and this works best on coffee tables and shelving, bringing interest and decoration at the same time. For some fantastic table and trolley selections that fit this look perfectly visit rockettstgeorge.co.ukmiafleur.com and roseandgrey.co.uk.
Another way to bring this look into your home is through soft furnishings like cushions. A copper or gold shiny finish can give a reflective quality and bring together the look [ oliverbonas.com have a new range of cushion which look fab ]. Finally accessories like vases and candle holders are a great way to bring a shelf or table to life, the shinier the better.

Tie dying had a recent serge in popularity with it becoming a strong trend in fabric last year but it’s just one part of the joys of pattern-creating with bleach.

Modern bleaching producing Scandinavian influenced designs

Bleach is an easy, when used safely, substance to use to create your own printed-style fabric in many variations.

Using brushes, sprays, knot tying, stencils and other tools, you can create so many different effects that result in incredibly beautiful fabrics. This DIY creative process is great to be able to create fabrics to match colour schemes, styles and patterns in your home. The fabrics can be used for further DIY projects including cushion making, upholstery and making other soft furnishings.

Modern bleach dyeing project from A Beautiful Mess

Two great features that cover all the aspects and great guidance for creating modern bleached fabric are from A Beautiful Mess and Threads Magazine. Both show inventive stylish results from using bleach dyeing.

‘With polished teak spokes and a spun aluminium dial, this clock gives a nod to Seventies design for retro statement style.’

Across the high street midcentury pieces are being produced and the styles from the era are influencing a lot of homewares and furniture. The great colours, fabric choices, wood tones and structures are desirable and homeware stores have got some great pieces.

Head to Marks and Spencer, Habitat, Heals, IKEA and Cult Furniture for easy midcentury-style finds but also look to search eBay for originals, reproductions and pieces that can be given a modern edge.
