This Autumn see the revival of a trend which never really goes away in many homes. Modern vintage does what it says, combining old styles and past trends with modern interpretations. Vintage styles have always inspired us in the present, whether it’s mid-century furniture, 70’s glam, or 80’s modernism you can take elements and work with them in any room.

There are no rules to creating this trend, infact it’s entirely up to you what feel you would like to bring. Although when introducing vintage pieces into a room make sure you you don’t over clutter or over exhaust the look. Mix different items from different decades to create an eclectic look, but try and bring it all together with a base colour [white is always a good place to start ].

Let the furniture and soft furnishings bring the colour

The rich 70’s tones of orange, moss green, burgandy, and teal will be perfect for this time of year. Darker woods like walnut and mango will ground the room and give it more interest. Once you have some key pieces of furniture, or a statement light then start bringing in some modern touches with pattern and print on soft furnishings and art work.

Bring a retro feel with brick wallpaper

If you are looking to make a statement why not go retro with a brick effect wallpaper. Popularity has grown massively for wall or garden effect wallpapers and some are even textured to give a more realistic appearance. And don’t worry, you are not trying to kid anybody, they just look great and create a fab backdrop to a room. Check out DunelmHenderson Interiors and I Love Wallpaper

Although having original pieces from decades past is ideal [ sometimes it can be time consuming hunting them out and finding the right thing ], there is some great reproduction furniture available online now. Check out rockettstgeorge.co.ukroseandgrey.co.uk and grahamandgreen.co.uk

home: trend [ anything goes ]

We all buy and collect items for our homes that we love, but sometimes trying to create a specific style or look through different rooms can be difficult. This year a big trend is to go eclectic and have an ‘anything goes’ moto.
Mix different materials and textures together, old and new, soft nuetral tones with bright pops of colour.
With furniture look at combining a modern unit sat next to something more vintage – mid century style furniture works great.
Pick strong geometric or digital printed cushions or throws and mix with a traditional Egyptian rug.
To achieve this look you don’t have to worry too much about what you are placing where, it’s very much about dressing your rooms without rules.

Mix different chairs around a dining table, this way you get to have all the styles you like on one space, whether plastic, wooden or metal.
[ Use this same thinking when entertaining by mixing different printed plates and bowls so everybody gets a different combination ].

This trend is all about embracing various styles and playing with old and new. Sit industrial next to ornate and rustic next to minimal. Find the balance that works for you. Of course this look isn’t about a cluttered collection of pieces, it’s about cleverly pairing different styles in selected areas of a room.

Look out this Summer for some great vintage and mid century markets, and after last week’s we have found another.

This times it’s Judy’s Vintage Fair and runs all over the UK arriving in London once a month.

‘Founded in 2010 from a gap in the market and some serious love for old-world furnishings, Judy’s founded ‘The Vintage Furniture Flea’ in our London residency, Bethnal Green. Covering furniture and homewares, textiles and electricals, the event was to be a mid-century celebration, a showcase of decoration from the fifties and beyond, all bound by affordability.’

If your looking for something kitsch and collectable then don’t miss out.

‘With traders coming from all over the UK, expect to see the eclectic:chairs, tables and more by giants like Ercol and G-Plan, barware and kitchenalia, textiles and fabrics, sewing machines, cameras, record players and radios, cocktail glasses and figurines, posters and magazines, lampshades, mirrors and more – from toys to telephones, ceramics to lighting, no box is left unticked!’
