So the expertise of an interior designer can be invaluable but with so much interior inspiration from magazines, blogs and tv programmes it’s a lot easier to get a good idea of how to style, create and design a great laid out room yourself. However more important that the actual styling is the fit and measurements. Furniture has to fit, spaces have to work, movement can’t be restricted and a room has to feel like layout has been considered properly.

We love the IKEA software to ensure your kitchens, cupboards and bathrooms are the perfect fit and comprises of all the right elements to suit your requirements and brief. Linking directly to the full shopping site you can work in all the components you need into the correctly measured room with even wall colour, allowance for features like fireplaces and doors, plus being able to view from all sides and angles. It’s an incredibly useful tool especially when you are spending a larger amount of money (on a kitchen) and need to get it right or it could be a costly mistake.

However recently there’s many more apps providing room planning tools. Can they measure up (literally) and are they are better help than an old fashioned pencil, ruler and graph paper, and do they give you more scope for using all sorts of furniture and not just that of IKEA

Over the coming month we’ll test out the various new apps for room planning and find what works and what doesn’t. We’d also love to hear if anyone has reviews, feedback or results from using room planning apps.

It’s May and the sun is beginning to make more and more appearances, so it’s definitely time to think about brightening up and bringing a new look to the garden. Think about current trends or colours that you’d like to incorporate into the garden and then you just need the paint and pots.

Decorating cheap plastic or ceramic pots is an easy way to update the garden time and time again.

Head to diy or craft stores for paint or spray suitable for outdoor use and explore Pinterest for pattern or colour ideas.

High street stores including Wilkos and any of the pound stores are great for getting basic plain pots and planters. For a better finish ensure cleaning the pots and a light sanding if old and tarnished to create the perfect base to design on. Set yourself up with outdoor primer, exterior sprays or paints and use a exterior varnish or lacquer to ensure a long lasting finish. Use masking tape or stencils to create modern designs with geometric influence, typography or embrace the popular dip/drop styles. And if you make a mistake it can simply be painted over.

We love the look of stylish minimal brand Muuto’s wall hooks (designed by Lars Tornøe) but at a single dot starting price of around £10, mounting a selection of sizes can mount up in cost.

Discovering a couple of diy copies is always good to share and these simple methods are effective and look great.

We loved finding a cool diy on Facebook (credit: Ceri Horton Thomas) using two cheap products from IKEA – the LOSJÖN bathroom  hangers (£4.75 for a pack of 5) with their basic IKEA 365+ cork coasters (80p for 2) simply glued over the top. This creates a simple minimal look both for hanging and as a extra you can pin items onto the cork – very versatile and easy to wall mount as the LOSJÖN are already designed to attach.

The second great tutorial is from GrilloDesigns  using flat topped wooden cabinet knobs. The tutorial guides you simply through, how to convert them to be able to be wall mounted. Keep them plain wood, or stain or paint them!

If you want a quick storage solution than this as simple as it gets. Using Ikea bed slats and some S hooks you can create a stylish wall hanging which can be used in any room to hold and store objects, stationary, accessories, kitchen utensils and more.

Use the slats to hang amongst other things pots, baskets and clips to bring interest and add practicality to a space.
