This new exhibition at the V&A museum, London is a must see for design fans, particular wood lovers. This new exhibiton explores the rise of plywood in manufacturing and design, from planes to chairs.

This fascinating show is divided into three sections by significant moments in production history of the material. The invention of the rotary vaneer cutter, the indroduction of moulding techniques to form modern furniture and the advent of digital technology and cutting.

Looking to great a new look for the garden or update a patio? Pushing the trend for outdoor rugs further we love the idea of stencilling patterns or designs directly onto a patio or decking. 

By using stencils (or freehand if very creative) you can produce a unique, look for an outdoor area – choosing from styles including geometric, Moroccan, ethnic, bohemian or midcentury.

Not everyone’s cup of tea for an online shopping destination but king of online selling, Amazon, is a surprising veritable gold mine for modern well priced homeware.

 A few searches of key wording including marble, copper, Moroccan, monochrome and even Moomin and we could be filling our virtual shopping trolley with anything from rugs to lighting, to ceramics and cushions, with prices so tempting it’s an easy way to kit out a new home with some great pieces, update current rooms or find great gifts for interiors lovers! 

If you love a certain look or piece from another interiors store but not the price tag, it’s definitely worth having a window shop around the Amazon mega site to see if a more affordable version is available.

So the expertise of an interior designer can be invaluable but with so much interior inspiration from magazines, blogs and tv programmes it’s a lot easier to get a good idea of how to style, create and design a great laid out room yourself. However more important that the actual styling is the fit and measurements. Furniture has to fit, spaces have to work, movement can’t be restricted and a room has to feel like layout has been considered properly. 


We love the IKEA software to ensure your kitchens, cupboards and bathrooms are the perfect fit and comprises of all the right elements to suit your requirements and brief. Linking directly to the full shopping site you can work in all the components you need into the correctly measured room with even wall colour, allowance for features like fireplaces and doors, plus being able to view from all sides and angles. It’s an incredibly useful tool especially when you are spending a larger amount of money (on a kitchen) and need to get it right or it could be a costly mistake. 

However recently there’s many more apps providing room planning tools. Can they measure up (literally) and are they are better help than an old fashioned pencil, ruler and graph paper, and do they give you more scope for using all sorts of furniture and not just that of IKEA? 


Over the coming month we’ll test out the various new apps for room planning and find what works and what doesn’t. We’d also love to hear if anyone has reviews, feedback or results from using room planning apps.

Continuing to be a strong trend for 2017, grey is a familiar safe option for interiors that is flexible and adaptable to your taste and style. It’s a modern neutral colour and especially when the lighter tones are used, it’s easy to compliment and create a homely interior. Although, those braver can make incredible design statements using the darker, richer tones and layering up shades of grey can be very effective. 

Visit Pinterest, and great sites like ApartmentTherapy.com for inspirational guides. 

Importantly your shades have to sit next to each other. With greys coming in warm, cool and varying Pantones, it’s worth having material swatches or paint samples when choosing pieces for a room. 

A good base is to start with a wall colour and the main piece of furniture – like the sofa. 

We love the (pictured above) Made.com Scott sofa (£999) matched with Farrow + Ball Railings almost pitch black grey. To this you can build on with soft furnishings, maybe using highlights of a blush pink or copper. For a clean, less bold approach use lots of white with grey to lighten and soften the look.

It’s all about expanding your knowledge about interiors and home design. Time to enjoy learning from the experts with a series of lectures on interior design. Already popular in 2016. Look out for further 2017 dates at The Royal College of Art on their website. 

Following on from the huge success of the series, the Interior Design department at the RCA has confirmed the Inside/Out public lecture programme for the next academic year.The talks feature international architects, designers, curators and writers who will discuss their own practice and dissect the role of interior design. Forthcoming speakers include Andrew Stevens from London-based design consultancy Graphic Thought Facility; French industrial designer matali crasset; Roberto Feo of post-disciplinary studio El Ultimo Grito; the director of London’s Design Museum, Deyan Sudjic; Alannah Western, former Creative Director of Selfridges and now Deputy Chairman of Selfridges Group; the leading British interior designer Ben Kelly; the visionary architect and designer Gaetano Pesce; the Senior Curator of Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art Paolo Antonelli; Christophe Egret of architecture and urban design practice Studio Egret West; the renowned sculptor Richard Wentworth; and the architect David Chipperfield. 

Talks take place in Lecture Theatre 1, Royal College of Art, Kensington Gore, London SW7 2EU at 6.30pm
