We are spoilt for choice when it comes to lighting. With the ever increasing number of new designs and re workings of old ones, it’s difficult to know where to begin.

Lighting as with all home decor is personal taste but sometimes we all need a little direction, so with that in mind a new trend for 2017 is sculptured lighting.

Floor lamp from Rockettstgeorge.co.uk

Strong angles and shapes currently dominate lighting departments, with geometric, 1920s and organic designs proving popular. Moulded one piece task lamps and curved wood pendants give fluidity and cast amazing light when on. And when not on they become works of art.

Globes are featuring big at the moment, in the form of clusters or individually. White is an obvious colour choice bit if you are feeling brave consider a bright colour, perfect set against a neutral room.

We discovered these chairs last year in John Lewis and imediatly fell in love with them. Not only are they a Robin Day classic deisgn but they are at the amazing price of just £59 each. Available in three colours; light grey, dark grey and red, these chairs would look great around a dining table mixed with other chairs, or on its own as an armchair in a living room or bedroom.

‘Robin Day designed the world’s first Polypropylene Chair in 1963 for the British furniture company Hille, and its combination of strength, affordability and sheer good lokks has never been equalled.

This pioneering design represented a breakthrough in furniture technology and has sold in tens of millions worldwide’

home: trend [ navy ]

As much as we are currently loving greys in interiors; shades of navy (inks, twilights, midnight and denim tones) are having a huge surge in popularity due to how flexible they are to introduce to an interior. With many complimentary and high light colours that can be used, navy works so well in different strengths depending on how bold the look you wish to go for.

We love fully embracing the dark side and including all wood work and ceilings, when painting, to create a dramatic strong look. However, navy can work equally well as a feature wall with bright white wood work and lots of complimentary colours in the soft furnishings and accessories.

Across stores, navy is coming through strong in luxurious fabrics like velvet, suede and silk for soft furnishings and it’s a opulent colour for sofas, armchairs and curtains.

As a colour it can sit with jewel tones (on trend colours including jade, teal, plum and magenta), works well with ever-popular metallics (copper, bronze and gold) and can compliment orange, blush pink and forest green.

Don’t be misled that a dark coloured kitchen may come across as gloomy and over powering.

We love the new love of black used in the home and kitchens can look so warm but stylish in this misunderstood colour.

Best used in shades slightly off from jet black on walls and tiles – and a good matt finish.

Farrow and Ball / Off Black • Homebase / Black Magic • Benjamin Moore / Black Tar

Strengthen the look by also using black kitchen doors and even worktops too. To compliment and add a break in the black, you could also use walnut tone worktops and split the colour choice of doors, instead of them all being black, drop in another colour tone – white, blush or grey.

Add accessories in copper and metallics. A vintage copper tap would be a great feature and if using open shelves give them great bronze wall brackets. Marble also works beautifully in this colour interior, great for a worktop on a kitchen island and splash back, or in smaller touches including lighting, crockery and kitchenalia.

Beautiful Copenhagen based brand, Ferm Living, have spent a decade producing and designing incredible homewares and furniture. Their clean, minimal, elegant design silhouette so identifiable to their name is highly admired and ergo regularly seen to be tried to be imitated and copied by other brands. The level of quality and materials is never achieved though. The lines are never as clean, and the colour tones never as pure.

Signature pieces that have influenced other people to design similar

Ferm Living is unique. This design comes with a price tag but these are pieces to invest in and collated well in home will result in beautiful interiors.

The design, colours and styles are well thought out and considered, with an obvious nod towards their Scandinavian heritage, a touch retro but most of all – every piece is like art, with great craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Excitedly we wait to see what 2017 brings for this brand.
