home: trend [ matte finish ]

This season shiney finishes and silk paint is out, and in comes matte walls and painted furniture.

Whether it’s light fittings, accessories, unit doors or table tops the look combines oxidized metals, matte glazes and chalk paint finishes. Black and grey look great in matte, but to bring lighter shades into a room consider creams, aqua greens [ in lighter shades ] and other pastel tones.

This trend works well in minimalist interiors and can be mixed with elements of Industrial, Rustic and Scandinavian. And note not everything has to be matte, mix with textured and reflective items such at leather, glass and metal to bring a well collated, thought through interior. Be selective in your choices and bring in colour where possible.

With regards to walls you can use wallpaper with minimal pattern or our preferred option is to paint. Consider clay and earthy colours [ in matte ] or try two colours [ pastels ] and divide a wall in half or an interesting pattern. Check out bestlivingroomdesigns.com for ideas.

home: trend [ natural tones ]

This year the home takes on a natural tone with creams, stone and woods. Create a calming, no fuss space which is clean, yet cosy. With a colour palette of nuetral creams, greys and browns there is little that can go wrong when creating this look.

Focus on soft furnishings like throws and cushions to enhance a sofa or chair, making sure you go for textured fabrics to bring a different element to all the muted colours. With furniture Mid Century and Scandinavian influences work the best, strong design with a great use of wood and fabric, especially leather.

When decorating your room, look at two possible options. Firstly paint the wall a pale cream or grey and accent the space with white furniture and accessories or reverse the look with all white walls, bringing in the addition of other tones in everything else. What’s nice with this trend is that you don’t necessarily have to stick to 2/3 colours, use as many as you like. Look at the palette below.

home: trend [ tropical ]

This summer the tropical emphasis is less on foliage and plants and more on fruit and strong graphic pattern.

[ Look at last weeks botanical trend to see how to work with floral and plant prints. ]

Vibrant fruit is key for this trend: watermelon, pineapple and strawberries create playful imagery and pattern within soft furnishings and wall art. There is almost a childlike feel, with cartoon style illustration and candy colours.

There is no need to go over the top with this trend as you can pick selected pieces to achieve the look.
Choose a bold framed print for the wall or a couple of bright patterned cushions to jazz up a sofa or chair [ hm.com has some great choices this season ]. Alternatively pick some fruit inspired ornaments in brass or gold to bring interest and fun to a shelf or table. The pineapple has been the most popular this year so far, in the form of lighting bases, storage jars, candles and vases to name a few. Oliver Bonas even stocks a gold jewellery stand in the shape of a pineapple!

Other motifs to sit alongside the fruits are palm trees and exotic birds, such as parrots, toucans and flamingoes, bringing together clashing combinations filling any room with joy and colour. [ Check out Sass & Belle for some fab tropical items ]

Accent colours to think about are light tones of pink, blue, yellow and peach, and the best wall colour has to be a neutral backdrop of white.
The great thing about this trend is that it easily transfers into the garden with lots of outdoor eating items such as cups, plates, napkins and table cloths available [ head to H&M and Tiger ].
So it’s simple, think desert island, exotic fruits and tropical birds and whatever the weather you will have a little bit of paradise in your home.

home: trend [ blush hues ]

Bring serenity and a beautiful calm to your interiors with blush hues. The pink palette of this trend is a dreamy mix of shades of pink with complimentary colour additions of white, cream and beige. These hues sit well with light woods or white furniture, keeping accessories in copper, a little monochrome and of course pink to a minimal to ensure the interior is minimal and clean.

Create a Spring feel for a lounge or bedroom with this beautiful trend,  covering windows with long billowing pale pink curtains, which could look great layered up with lace nets, scatter cushions in a variety of pale pinks with the odd one with subtle pattern and opt for a couple of pink tones for the walls.
